Digital Design
Supported by Creative Scotland
Professional Development Award
Alongside the traditional method of working I have been developing a digital silverware collection.
I had previously been restricted by the size of pieces I could create. This was due to the process of making through rapid prototyping and the expense of out sourcing the mould making.
With generous funding support from Creative Scotland I have been able to purchase a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) milling machine to make the plastic press forming moulds needed to create larger pieces of silverware.
Using the digital computer models I am able to CNC mill the form into the plastic and then use the mould to press the silver sheet.
A faceted dish made using this process is currently on display in Contemporary British Silversmiths ‘Fit for Purpose’ exhibition in the V&A London until 16th September 2012.
